Last week Owlcat Games, the developers of cRPG Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, tackled the majestic Aasimars, descendants of celestials. This time the race under scrutiny belongs to the opposite side of the spectrum: the descendants of fiends, Tieflings.
For the first time, players could have encountered Tieflings in the Wildcards DLC for Pathfinder: Kingmaker that added a new Tiefling companion Kaessi and a number of NPCs such as the Sweet Teeth and the vendor named Zarcie. In Wrath of the Righteous, players can recruit a Thiefling companion named Woljif Jefto and get to know this thieving Family a bit closer.
Much like it is the case with aasimars, the outsider blood can be dormant for a few generations before making itself known.
However, unlike aasimars, the tieflings’ position in Mendev is far from comfortable. The Crusader nation has been waging an endless war against the demons of the Abyss. And, while most half-breeds are treated just like anyone else, it is not the case for tieflings.
Their appearance constantly reminds others of the enemy, provoking hatred, fear, and disgust. Only a few tieflings are able to break this wall of distrust by carrying out selfless and brave deeds, while others are doomed to be always treated with disdain.
A tiefling’s life is far from easy, and searching for adventure is often the only choice – a way to find a new life and break free from the seal of darkness laid upon them. Or, conversely, to take revenge on the world that has cast them out. Tieflings make great rogues, powerful mages and magi, and even more powerful warlocks, thanks to the outsider power in their blood. Those who accept the call of evil may also become priests of various evil entities.
There is a great variety in tiefling heritages, but the most common ones are:
- Hellspawn (Devil-spawn)
- Pitborn (Demon-spawn)
- Motherless (Qlippoth-spawn)
- Foulspawn (Demodand-spawn)
- Hungerseed (Oni-spawn)
- Shackeborn (Kyton-spawn)
- Grimspawn (Daemon-spawn)
- Faultspawn (Asura-spawn)
- Spitespawn (Div-spawn)
- Beastbrood (Rakshasa-spawn)
