Guild Wars 2 Secrets of the Obscure Expansion lands on 22 August 2023, bringing a fourth expansion to this huge MMO.

Tyrians might suspect that the future of Guild Wars 2 is far beneath our feet, but developer ArenaNet just blew away that idea. After delving into What Lies Beneath and digging up trouble in recent story updates, players can look forward to a high-altitude adventure in Secrets of the Obscure. Just announced, the new expansion will unravel the mystery of an enigmatic structure which has hung silently over our battles for the last two decades.

On launch day, eager Commanders will find themselves clambering through the Skywatch Archipelago. This is the first of two new maps being added to the game on as part of this news. Hanging high in the sky above Tyria, these floating islands are under attack from the Kryptis, a demonic race of malevolent beings streaming through instabilities in the Mists. Assuming we push them back, expect to take the fight into the Demon Realm, where the fate of the world rests on your actions and some secretive new allies.

Guild Wars 2 Secrets of the Obscure Expansion - rifts appear around a tower

While it sounds like players will be cleaning up the repercussions of End of Dragons, I might be entirely wrong. What I do know is that alongside the new narrative path, players are going to get new explorable areas, two new Strike Missions, and new gameplay features. This includes the Heart of the Obscure, a mystical master key that can be upgraded to activate special doors and reward chests, create support items like leyline and updraft generators, and open and seal the rifts for allies like the Astral Ward. Another prominent addition is Advanced Flight Masteries. Skyscale mount will be easier in Secrets of the Obscure, but for those players who train their Skyscale in both the new track from Guild Wars 2 Secrets of the Obscure and the previously released Path of Fire will earn additional functionality for their skyscale. Two of the Secrets of the Obscure skyscale masteries – in-combat mounting and updraft use – will also apply to the griffon mount.

There are also two ten player strike missions, Cosmic Observatory and the Temple of Febe. A new reward system will cash in Astral Acclaim for unique items like armor pieces, weapon and mount skins, gold, legendary crafting materials, and more. A brand-new equipment slot will unlock for Relics and each of the game’s nine professions will get the ability to equip the weapons previously reserved for their elite specialization.

Previous news had noted that expansions might not be quite as gargantuan as they previously had been for this wildly successful MMORPG but at $24.99 or local equivalent, this isn’t bad value. While Guild Wars 2 Secrets of the Obscure will kick off with just wo new maps, a third will arrive later with new story updates. We also get to see inside the Wizard’s tower as jumping off point into this new expansion.
