Released late in 2022, High On Life proved to be somewhat of a surprise hit on Microsoft platforms. In our PC version review, we found it to bet 8.5 out of 10, boasting crazy humor and being a very cool shooter. Importantly, its exclusivity to Xbox over the Nintendo Switch or PlayStation 5 demonstrated that there could be successful, non-driver games released only to the One or Series X/S.
Many people with an Xbox have to join the Xbox Game Pass to make the console worthwhile, often sticking to a select group of multiplayer games and major annual titles – like the EA Sports titles. High On Life reportedly became one of the most-played games on the console upon its release, with players clearly going all-in on the sudden presence of an exclusive game. There may soon be a reason to return to the Squanch Games creation.

It didn’t take long for the creators of High On Life to get back into the studio and come up with some more ideas to take the story further. As anyone who’s played the game will know, one of the protagonist’s main allies is the living and mostly psychopathic knife, Knifey. It’s completely mad, and it looks like it’ll be getting its focus in a new game mode or storyline.
The team tweeted a simple post: “New High On Life Content Loading… Coming Soon.” Given how much of a hit this was for Xbox, Microsoft will surely be looking to hype up this DLC launch in the coming months, especially as all we’ve been given so far is a manic rant from Knifey. Called “High On Knife,” the snippet video with the tweet has Knifey say: “This is what I’ve been waiting for! Free Me!”
Roiland’s creations love finding a way to gaming
Easily the greatest draw of High On Life and, soon, High On Knife is its distinct place in the world of comedy, co-created by Justin Roiland. It’s very similar in tone, style, and comedic delivery to Solar Opposites and Rick and Morty. For many who played the single-player story, this style made the experience so entertaining, which is why many will have gone out to discover other non-Squanch Games creations of those IPs.
To date, Rick and Morty, Roiland’s most successful comedic creation, is the biggest entrant to the gaming scene. Across the US, it’s made a splash across multiple platforms. High On Life did exceedingly well without being tied to a pre-existing IP, but it certainly fits into the comedic universe of games that all draw from Roiland’s co-creations. Soon, players will return for even more action with everyone’s favorite nut-job knife.
