PS4 Single Handed Controller by Ben Heck

PS4 Single Handed Controller by Ben Heck

Modder Benjamin Heckendorn had published a couple of videos on his YouTube channel, in which he details his quest to create a single handed PS4 controller.

The modder used components from PS4 Mini Pad that are smaller than the standard ones. Additionally, Ben Heck had created and 3d printed a model of a handle that comfortably lays in right hand.

The official PlayStation controllers are very difficult to mod. I’ve been looking for a easier alternative for years which would allow me to make Single Handed Controllers for PS4. I think I’ve finally found a good candidate! In this Part 1 video I’ll do a teardown, talk about why it looks good, and start mocking up a new single handed design.

Using the 3d printed handle as a base, the modder then used clay to build the form of the future controller and try out the placement of buttons, taking care not to put too many of them in one place.

Took a while but I finally finished the prototype for a PS4 Single Handed Controller based off the Hori PS4 Mini Pad. In this second episode I do a bunch of 3D design using Fusion 360, print the parts, wire everything together then test using Red Dead Redemption 2.

Back in May, Microsoft introduced the Xbox Adaptive Controller designed primarily to meet the needs of gamers with limited mobility and make gaming more accessible.

Built from the ground up through strong partnerships with The AbleGamers Charity, The Cerebral Palsy Foundation, SpecialEffect, Warfighter Engaged, and many community members. Input from these groups has helped shape the design, functionality, and packaging of the Xbox Adaptive Controller.

  1. I think these mods are great. There are a lot of disabled gamers out there. Some who can’t play games because of limitations. Xbox recently released a controller for the disabled and it wins a lot of brownie points with me. I think people don’t take into consideration that someone who is disabled is restricted in activities that most people take for granted. Video games seem like a perfect medium for them. I hope the next consoles really take this into consideration from the get go.
