It’s no secret that gamers are always on the lookout for new RPGs to sink their teeth into. Whether it’s an immersive open-world or an engaging story, there’s nothing quite like becoming fully immersed in a new game. If you’re an avid gamer looking for your next RPG fix, here are a few games you need to try.
Dungeons And Dragons
Although it needs no introduction, Dungeons and Dragons is a tabletop role-playing game that two or more players play. It has long been considered the epitome of role-playing games and has managed to move away from its somewhat nerdy image and into the mainstream (Vin Diesel, anyone!). It has managed to do this by constantly updating itself and remaining fresh with many exciting new products. One of its latest and greatest offshoots is Spelljammer: Adventures in Space which transports you from its typical fantasy setting into an exciting space environment. Nonetheless, it retains everything that makes the original D & D so much fun, including a range of characters to play as. You can play Plasmoid characters, humans, and dwarves, along with a raft of other fascinating personalities and races. If you are already familiar with role-playing but have traditionally erred on the side of the futuristic over the fantasy setting, Spelljammer might be the perfect campaign to get your teeth stuck into!
Diablo 3
Diablo 3 is a dungeon crawler game that was released in 2012. It is the third installment in the wildly popular Diablo series, developed by Blizzard Entertainment. However, Blizzard’s improvement of the interface and gameplay mechanics, as well as the sheer size and scope of the world, make Diablo 3 such a memorable game with immense replayability. Although it’s a decade old, it remains an RPG fan favorite partly due to the scope it provides the player regarding exploration. You can go it alone or form up with others to counter some of the more challenging aspects.
Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic
Star Wars tends to be a franchise that rests on its laurels a bit too much, especially when it comes to games. However, it has provided some truly spectacular options, with Knights Of The Old Republic being one of the most famous RPGs ever made. It takes place before the first movie’s events, when the galaxy was a republic rather than an empire. It is enormous fun to explore this world before the emperor came along (not to mention the First Order in the terrible final movies) and get the chance to indulge in what most Star Wars fans love about the franchise. The best part is that you select a class at the beginning, and the game more or less pans out according to your initial choice. This allows players to replay the game multiple times and achieve vastly different results.
Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim
Any article about RPGs would be incomplete without something from Bethesda. It was a toss-up between Fallout and Elder Scrolls, with the latter winning out thanks to the sheer size and opportunities (and gaffes) the map provides. You can choose to follow the game in a prescribed fashion or spend your time enthralled in the immaculately fleshed-out setting. Moreover, you can enjoy this game on a wide range of devices and even go portable with the port for the Nintendo Switch. Nevertheless, the best way to expense this particular RPG is via a computer with enough grunt to showcase its beautiful scenery.
Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild
Some have called this one of the best RPGs ever created. While this might be hyperbole, it is a fantastic addition to the Zelda universe. Although some might not classify this as an RPG per se and more of an action-adventure, the fact that you get free reign on a humongous map and can choose how you proceed puts it firmly in the RPG territory. Two minor annoyances that preclude this game from being the GOAT are that it can only be played on a Nintendo and that your weapons and armor are destructible.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Witcher has long been considered one of the greatest RPG games and stories of all time. It is so good that Netflix picked up the rights to create a series involving none other than the Man of Steel himself playing the titular role (which was a great choice thanks to Cavill’s love for the genre). It allows players to play the game on their own terms and inhabit an entirely different world.
So there you have it, six fantastic RPG games for gamers who love exploring, fighting, and opening lots and lots of crates! While some on this list might be controversial, you should enjoy them all.
