Hero’s Hour Quick-Hit Review

Recently we have been posting a lot of news about Hero’s Hour from developer ThingOnItsOwn. Now I am finally able to give you my quick-hit review for the title. It is a strategy RPG that plays like Heroes of Might and Magic Two but with an active battle system. We will get more into that below in our review.

Hero’s Hour has a simple setup. You can choose any size map you wish and that will determine the number of enemies you will fight against. Each map is procedurally created so every game will be different. Along with each map being different each time there are hundreds of minions to play with. There are spells to learn and different buildings to build within your town center for more powerful minions. To be exact there are 11 factions to choose from, 22 hero classes, 50 hero skills, 83 spells and a lot to explore and find.

The battles are not your normal style for a strategy RPG. Instead of it being turn-based every encounter is played out in real-time. There is a party limit to how many forces are on the field at one time but you can quickly send out reinforcements if so needed. Spells used in battle work similar to the Heroes of Might and Magic games but they have different areas of effects for each type. Each character wields its attack and attack type depending on what it is.

There is one thing I love to see in a strategy RPG that is missing from this title, a campaign. It is the clear lack of campaign that makes me less compelled to play this game over and over. Having a storyline to follow certain units through different situations would be fun, even if that map changed every time you had to start it over. Even Heroes of Might and Magic had a campaign between a good character and an evil one.

Overall, Hero’s Hour is good for a couple of hours and then it just turns into a repetitive playstyle with changing landscapes. The ability to play in real-time during encounters is a fun feature, however, it gets old very quickly. It is retailing right now on Steam for 17.99 USD.
