Redfall, the upcoming FPS from Arkane Studios, will launch without performance mode on Xbox.
Lock and load but don’t expect to do it quickly if you’re planning to play Redfall. The beleaguered shooter from Arkane Studios hasn’t even launched yet and it’s got some bad news for players. Anybody planning to pick up the open-world shooter and blow away some vampires will need to do it at 30FPS. Last night, the studio dropped the news that the title will not have a performance mode on initial release. This means players on Xbox Series s and X might not see the same frame rates they expect. The team behind the title confirmed that it will only have a quality mode, giving consumes 4K 30 FPS on Xbox Series X and 1440p at 30FPS on Xbox Series S.
This comes as something of a blow for players looking to squad up and get shooting. Xbox Performance Mode is a feature available on the Xbox Series X and Series S consoles that enables better gaming performance by prioritizing frame rates and reducing visual effects. It boosts the frame rate of games up to 120 frames per second (fps) on compatible displays, resulting in smoother and more responsive gameplay. Traditionally, FPS benefit most from high refresh rates and low latencies. While RPGs like the delayed Starfield might not suffer as much, milliseconds can determine the outcome in an FPS. Redfall has already seen delays after missing an early release window of summer 2022. It seems that publishers Bethesda and Arkane are unwilling to push it back any further and continue to target a 2 May 2023 release.
For anybody who is just hearing about Redfall, this upcoming shooter will invite itself in on PC and Xbox shortly, challenging players to team up and blow their way through a vampire infestation in the titular town of Redfall. The gameplay appears to be a mix of Arkane’s other titles, Deathloop and Dishonored, with plenty of gore and gunplay included. Crossplay on console and PC is likely to be in place too, but don’t take anything for granted quite yet. You can find out more about this slick-looking vampire escapade over at the official website, just don’t worry about a high-refresh rate monitor quite yet.
