Star Trek Resurgence PC Review: The First Game in Years That Feels Like Star Trek

At the Game Awards 2021, Dramatic Labs unveiled the Star Trek: Resurgence announcement trailer, a story-driven adventure game set in the Star Trek universe.

Made up of over two former Telltale employees, it’s no surprise that their game continues the tradition of game design in The Walking Dead: The Game, Game of Thrones, and Tales from the Borderlands. If you’ve ever played a Telltale adventure game, you know exactly what to expect.

Star Trek: Resurgence comes out just in time. We haven’t had a traditional single-player Star Trek game in nine years, and the new Star Trek shows have been mixed. But Star Trek Resurgence dates back to a time when the franchise was smart, thoughtful, and maybe a little formulaic – comfort food for the weary sci-fi fan. Simply put, this is the first game in years that really feels like Star Trek.

This adventure game takes place after the Star Trek: The Next Generation events. Together with Officer Jara Rydek and Private Carter Diaz, you will try to unravel the sinister mystery of two civilizations on the brink of war.

The gameplay is simple: walking, talking, and occasionally pressing buttons. Probably my favorite game of this type at the moment is The Wolf Among Us, simply because it reflects what fans love about this venerable old franchise, and in this game, I noticed bits of the old and sweet story that the series was popular at the time.

Honestly, Star Trek fans will love this game. There are many links and Easter eggs, hidden or in plain sight. As a big fan of spaceships, I was delighted to see the video arrive at the first starbase. Seeing ships like the Steamrunner fly by is amazing.

This is fitting since many people at Resurgence developer Dramatic Labs are Telltale veterans.

Resurgence - 1

If you haven’t played the Telltale game, the gameplay in Star Trek: Resurgence is still very easy to explain. It is an adventure game that focuses on dialogue and narrative choices. From time to time, you will walk or solve simple puzzles, but the essence of the gameplay is to listen to what other characters say and react for a limited amount of time.

Resurgence - 2

What you say will change how other characters react to you over time, and certain decisions can change the course of the story. You can’t just save and get a remake; you are stuck with what you choose. In practice, this means that Star Trek Resurgence is very similar to an episode of a TV show, only the one where you control.

Star Trek: Resurgence, in addition to the usual story-driven adventure with a choice of dialogues, will allow players to explore the game world in a third-person mode, control a shuttle, fire a phaser, scan the environment, and enjoy the game world. The game will have elements of stealth and various mini-games.

Resurgence - 4

Resurgence is a single-player game in which the player will be given control of two protagonists serving in the United States. Decidedly: Carter Diaz, an enlisted engineer from the lower decks, and Jara Rydek, first officer. The developers note that this separation of heroes allows them to show service on the Federation spaceship from two different points of view: the one who gives orders and the one who gives them.

The game takes place in the year 2380, immediately after the events of Star Trek: Into Darkness (2002), the last film about the team from Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987-1994).

The plot of Resurgence begins with the Resolute Starship being sent to the edge of the galaxy, where two neighboring civilizations are on the brink of war. While organizing peace negotiations, the ship’s crew uncovers a sinister plot.

Resurgence - 5

The developers assure that even though, in general, the players are waiting for a familiar story, the choice they make will have consequences: the plot may begin to develop in an unfavorable scenario for the player, or one of the characters may die.

Resurgence - 6

Among other characters, familiar characters will appear in the game in the role of Ambassador Spock, which was already announced in the first trailer. According to the developers, they had to conduct “hundreds of auditions” to find an actor with a voice similar to the voice of Leonard Nimoy, who died in 2015, the canonical performer of the role of Spock.

The shortcomings of Resergency include a slow and awkward third-person mode and outdated facial animation, and some of the level details look like they were taken straight from the old Star Trek games. And what was also strange was that there were no graphics settings in the version presented for review. The game went at 30 fps, and what I didn’t like the most, and I hope that this is only in the intended version of the game, if you click Escape, pause the game, and then return to the game again, you are thrown into the menu, and all progress is lost.

Star Trek: Resurgence will not be distributed episodically but will be fully released on the day of release. And most likely, a game like Star Trek: Resurgence will allow developers to immerse themselves in the Star Trek universe and show their best.

Summary
Interesting, open-ended conversations (a game, after all), discussions of the ins and outs of life, and spacewalks in familiar ships are a fantasy that really takes you right into the Star Trek universe. Although the game has some major technical issues at the moment, the game is definitely a real Star Trek game that is fun to play. If you want to immerse yourself in a brand new Star Trek storyline from the developers of Narrative Adventures, this is the game for you.
