January is traditionally the month when the gaming community goes into winter hibernation, but there are still a few interesting releases coming out this month. A remaster of Naughty Dog’s popular The Last of Us Part II, a sequel to the legendary Tekken fighting game series, and the next installment in the Japanese Like a Dragon franchise have all been released. In addition to the big game projects, there are also some unique and atmospheric indie titles coming out, so you’re sure to have plenty to play this month.
The Last of Us Part II Remastered
Undoubtedly, the main gaming event in January will be the remaster of the rather controversial The Last of Us Part II. Released in 2020 shortly before the PlayStation 5, the title never got an improved version. The remaster promises improved graphics, a new mode, and several cut locations and scenes with developer commentary. The game was on 19 January exclusively on PS5. Also, we recommend watching the incredible HBO series of the same name if you haven’t seen it yet, and check out safe au pokies, where you can also find interesting gaming news.
Tekken 8
Last year saw the release of several powerful fighting games, such as Street Fighter 6 and Mortal Kombat 1. Japanese studio Bandai Namco decided not to lag behind and, in December, presented to the community a demo of the eighth part of the popular Tekken series. The game is created on Unreal Engine 5, promising fantastic graphics, also players are waiting for updated gameplay mechanics, as well as a rich list of brand new and all-time favorite fighters of the franchise. Tekken 8 was released on 26 January on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. By the way, you can read about the history of this series here.
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth
Another new entry this month is JRPG Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth from Japanese Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and publisher Sega. This is the next main installment in the popular Like a Dragon franchise and sequel to Yakuza: Like a Dragon. You will play as Ichiban Kasuga, the game’s new protagonist and old acquaintance Kazuma Kiryu. The developers decided to remove the turn-based combat system from the last part of the series. In addition to Japan, the events will unfold in sunny Hawaii. The game was released on the 26th of January on PC and on consoles of both generations.
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown
It’s been 14 years since the last full-fledged Prince of Persia game was released. This year, Ubisoft studio decided to revive the franchise and release a platformer with a new hero, Sargon. The protagonist will have several combat skills and abilities to move (such as teleport). Traditionally, the players are expected to have dynamic battles, puzzles, pumping and secret rooms. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown was released on the 18th of January on PC, consoles of both generations and Switch.
Sovereign Syndicate
Moving on to indie new releases. Sovereign Syndicate is a Victorian steampunk RPG in which you have to investigate the disappearance of townsfolk in order to uncover a mysterious cult. The game is interesting in that the randomness of plot points is determined by a unique fortune-telling system using Tarot cards instead of dice. Sovereign Syndicate features a variety of mythical creatures as well as robots. Play as one of three unique characters with their own history and skills and explore the open world. The novel was released on 15th of January on PC.
