Torchlight Infinite just announced a speedrun challenge that only the most miserly heroes can hope to win when they pit F2P gamers against streamer Richard W Campbell.
While Richard Campbell might not be synonymous with the Torchlight franchise and ARPG experiences, this big-money poker player is about to bring his bank balance to bear with a speedrun challenge of a different kind. In an effort to show players just how inadequate whaling will be in the upcoming Torchlight title, Richard will pit his own cash against F2P players.
Developer XD has invited players to run the gauntlet, defeat the Traveler boss, and overcome Timemark Six in the fastest time possible. While they’ll have to outdo their fellow heroes with skill and whatever loot they have to hand, Richard will be free cash in his chips at the in-game store. That’s right, participants will not be able to spend any money to get an edge. Players slashing their way through the competition will earn 1,000 Primocryst just for participating, while the top 10 faster hunters will win 18,888 Primocryst. There’s more than a simple sponsorship opportunity for Richard too. The resident whale will win back twice their total in-game spend if they beat the player base.
This new event is a clear signal to the gaming community that Torchlight is a play to win experience, without the cash-based nonsense that blighted the Diablo Immortal launch. We took a look at prerelease monetization and came to the conclusion that this was the case too. Anybody winning some of the game’s premium currency would be best placed to spend it on the snazzy-looking skins and weapon flair already available. Check out a few of these in our previews. If you feel the need for speed, then head over to the Torchlight Infinite website now and jump in to go faster for free until 2 November on PC and mobile.
