The first 2023 UK chart list kicks off a new year with Nintendo taking 6 of the 10 top spots for video game sales.
It looks like team Mario did some serious numbers over the festive period because this week’s UK video game chart is something of a Nintendo whitewash. In between the usual shooters and sports sims, the Japanese games company managed to post plenty of must-buy bargains for anybody picking up a new Nintendo Switch. While Mario Kart 8 Deluxe tops off the team at number 3 in the UK Charts, the likes of Pokémon, Animal Crossing, Nintendo Switch Sports, and Minecraft stack across the 5th to 9th spots. Chart stalwarts FUIFA, and Call of Duty hang in but are pushed down to 2nd and 4th place respectively, while Sonic Frontiers scrapes in at 10th place. The only real outlier in this impressive set of figures is the chart topping God of War Ragnarök, which jumps back up to the top spot this week.

This domination is likely a result of festive shopping however and won’t likely continue going forward into the new year. The UK sales charts document the number of video games flying off the shelves each week and physical sales always fluctuate at this time of year. Familiar franchises always benefit from the festive shopping throng with new console sales and unfamiliar parental purchases bolstering iconic brands.
