NCSoft has granted an official licence to a City of Heroes server run by fans.
In something of a shock move, the studio behind the likes of Aion, Guild Wars 2, and the upcoming HZD MMO has granted the seal of approval for an off the books City of Heroes server. The server, known as Homecoming, has been online since the Korean publisher wound down adventures around 2012. Now, fans can fetch their capes with NCSoft’s blessing.
The news broke on the official Homecoming forums, detailing the news and what this mans for players. Anybody who took to crimefighting on this unofficial server will know that while the spin off contains all the features and fights that players remember, if always came with a bit of risk. Fan run and private server instances of popular games aren’t officially endorsed. Even if you find a trustworthy server admin, there’s always the possibility that the IP owner will drop a cease and desist, wiping away time and potentially money that you’ve spent in this virtual world. This goes double for MMORPGs.
In this instance, Homecoming has always had a tacit seal of approval form NCSoft, and now it’s official. If you missed leaping tall buildings and fighting crime with a legion of your own in this legendary MMORPG, then you can fly back in and be sur that you’re not wasting any time. Head over to the official Homecoming City of Heroes server forum to find out is capes are back in fashion.
