Dead Space Team Explores the Gruesome Necromorph Nightmare

Dead Space Remake Launches January 27, 2023

Last week, EA and Motive took to the airwaves in honor of the fourteen anniversary of Dead Space. During the livestream event, an all-new extended gameplay walkthrough series of the upcoming remake made its debut. Viewers get a proper peek inside the revamped USG Ishimura as well as Necromorph combat. The latter showcases the innovative “Peeling System” that is something completely new for the remade version of the game. Lastly, developers offered fans a peek at the upcoming Collector’s Edition from Limited Run Games.

To further ramp up excitement, the team also released a brand new developer blog that explores “The New Necromorph Nightmare.” The post offers insight from Senior Producer Philippe Ducharme, Creative Director Roman Campos-Oriola, and Technical Director David Robillard. The trio discusses the terror-inducing necromorphs and how players can combat these formidable foes.

One of the new features that players will encounter is the “peeling system”. Necromorphs are built with layers of flesh, muscle, and bone, that is revealed as they take damage. Players will literally blow off parts of their bodies to reveal what’s underneath. Add in the dismemberment system and there’s a lot of gruesome new action coming when the game is released.

“Usually, games give only a limited amount of feedback when you’re shooting at an enemy,” explains Gameplay Tech Lead Pierre-Vincent Belisle.  “What we wanted to do is have Necromorphs show you—without an actual health bar or HP—how much damage they’ve gotten. So you can visually inspect the character and say, ‘I should aim for this, because it’s been weakened.’”

“We wanted to set a new standard for dismemberment in games,” says Pierre-Vincent. “So when Isaac cuts an enemy in pieces, that enemy’s character model gets actually, truly cut into pieces. It’s not a fake-out.”
