Is British Telecom Breaking Xbox Accounts? - xbox game pass picture

BT, the big British telecom provider appears to be taking over and breaking Xbox accounts, according to social media reports.

Reports are surfacing across social media that Xbox owners who grabbed a free Xbox Game Pass offer from UK telecoms supplier BT are now facing some serious issues with their online accounts. At least some customers of the legacy operator on the British Isles are complaining that after 6 or 12 months of gratis gaming thanks to a promotional offer, they are now unable to manage their subscription, meaning they are effectively locked out of the Xbox Game Pass until BT release their account.

Based on reports, the situation seems to be coming up as customers reach the end of their promotional period, and while the extent of the issue is as yet unknown it does seem like it could get worse. The initial offer from BT allowed broadband internet subscribers upgrading their connection to benefit from a free Xbox Game Pass. The Xbox Game Pass is normally a subscription based service that unlocks access to a huge variety of video games. Players with the paid service can download and play any game from this catalog across Xbox Series S|X, and Xbox One  consoles while they have an active subscription. The basic idea has been a driving force behind the success of the Xbox console in recent years, expanding to other platforms and  offering an Ultimate tier too. As you might expect, this was a hugely compelling offer, giving access to everything from Sea of Thieves to Forza and hundreds of other titles for free. The issue here seems to be the way the pass was applied to accounts.

it’s pretty common to see free trials for this online subscription service., with team green sticking codes on everything from potato chips to gaming accessories. However, it seems that despite the near ubiquitous nature of these codes, UK telecoms provider didn’t provide codes. Instead, according to the information we can gather and further details from NME, customers had to grant BT access to manage their Game Pass Subscription. As a result, consumers that signed up when the offer launched in October 2021 are staring to find that their accounts are still under the thumb for the next few years. For anybody looking to extend access to the hugely popular online subscription, and keep hold of their in game achievements, this presents a problem.

We have reached out to BT for comment and the extent of the issue is still unclear at this stage, but we’re hoping for those affected to get some sort of fix soon rather than lose years of play progress on their accounts.
