MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries Opens Up The Console Wars With Cross-Play relaunch

MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, the battle bot game from Pirahna Games, is set to come crashing onto Steam, GoG, and Xbox Platforms with a bunch of new features next month.

After stumbling onto the Epic Games Store back in 2019, you might have expected MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries to go quietly, but Piranha Games isn’t done yet. The massive bot battler, and the latest in the MechWarrior series, is due to undergo something of a relaunch when it hits Steam, GoG, and Xbox Series X|S on 27 May. Alongside this release, players can expect more than 30 new and enhanced features. While you may remember many of these from our update last year, we now know that this will also include cross-play functionality.

No more will gamers across Xbox Series X|S and PC have to lament that their Thrustmaster and mouse can’t go toe to toe with an Xbox Elite controller. For the very first time in MechWarrior history, PC and console players can jump into the battlefields of the future, dominated by BattleMechs, hulking machines of war capable of levelling entire cities. As more new mechs join the galaxy-spanning conflict, players will now be able to fight alongside a maximum of three other compatriots as MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries opens up PvE encounters to an all-new co-op cross-play system.

If you’re already an experience Mechwarrior pilot then these new pilots will even be able to go co-op across your existing DLC campaigns, thanks to a brand new DLC sharing mode. Across the base game and extended DLC this new lease of life for the once Epic exclusive will offer up tons of tweaks, including Infantry present throughout the game, full 360 LOD radar (with BAP available with DLC), more extreme conditions and effects, enhanced AI, enhanced salvage crates, and more.

While the opening salvo of MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries might have been mixed, Piranha Games will be hoping the 27 May will blow players away when Mechwarrior and its brand new DLC step onto Xbox Series X|S (digital), Steam, and GOG.com on May 27 for €29.99 / £24.99 / $29.99. Check out the trailer above for more or head over to the official website to run through all the upcoming enhancements.
