Sonic The Hedgehog 2 looks to be at the top of the charts across the US and UK, but this time not on any gaming platform.
Most Monday morning’s we’d check in with the UK charts, and today is no different, but there’s a different platform to consider this time. The UK and US movie box office is worth taking a look at today, as Sega’s blue speedster is racing ahead of rivals and tearing up the takings in US and UK cinemas. Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the sequel to the 2020 silver screen outing of the popular video game character, now sits ahead of comic book caper Morbius, The Batman, and new release Ambulance to take a significant lead in its opening weekend in both territories. Blowing away numbers from the first adventure, the second film has taken around $71 million across the US with UK audiences inserting in the region of £5 million in coins.
Opening on this weekend in most territories, and earlier in some of its 53 regions, , the second outing for Sonic isn’t just a successful follow on for a video game movie, it is the biggest box office opening for a video game adaptation on record. The worldwide total is in excess of $140 million and seems set to suggest that movie outings are back for families. Jim Carrey returns as Dr. Robotnik, Ben Schwartz also reappears as Sonic, and Irdis Elba is the voice behind Knuckles. Fans of the iconic characters, as far back as the 90s will recognize the voice of Colleen O’Shaughnessey, who has played Miles Prower across several the franchise entries. You might also know Miles as Sonic’s fox friend, Tails.
Whether the opening weekend means more Sonic movies, we don’t know, but it is likely to mean more video game tie ins on the big screen, as studios clamour to ride the success of the Sonic series to make a buck. Whether it’s Sonic, Tomb Raider, or Resident Evil we will have to wait and see.
