Starfield Video Spotlights Quests and Companions

Starfield Will Shen Interview

Bethesda has released a new Starfield video with Lead Quest Designer Will Shen. In it, he answers some community questions about the quest system in the upcoming sci-fi game.

Shen chats about random quest encounters players will find on any of the hundreds of planets they’ll explore. Some planets will have “dynamically-placed settlements” that offer players quests and insights into the unique quirks of the planet and its inhabitants. These encounters could possibly lead to dungeons and other quests along the way.

He further offers insight into the companion system and how they will react to players’ decisions. Each companion has their view of how things should be happening, and each will react to players’ decisions. At times, these companions will take over speaking duties, leading to dicey situations. Companions fight with players as well as help crew the ship and players can trade equipment with them.

Decisions are important in the game as each determines which companions will ultimately end up with players at the end of the game. It’s possible that companions can die or leave as the game unfolds.

Shen briefly touches on the faction system and, surprisingly, reveals that players will be able to journey to this Solar System. He calls it “visiting the Old Neighborhood.” Players will learn what happened to Earth and visit Mars and its city of Sidonia.

It’s a fabulous peek into the game’s quest system and is incredibly awesome for fans of lore.

The game launches for PC and Xbox Series X/S in 2023.
