THE400 Mini is a Teeny Tiny Modern Atari 400 Computer - the 400mini

Old games come home again as the THE400 Mini shrinks a retro masterpiece into a modern Atari 400 homage.

If the SNES Classic, the VCS console, the C64 MINI and Nintendo’s online offerings weren’t enough you can now get your hands on the THE400 Mini. Plaion has just started stocking shelves in Europe with a modern-day recreation of the iconic Atari 400, all squeezed down into a handful of greatness. The reinvention of a classic design is now available from major online stockists at something around $119.99/£99.99 and features the same classic lines as this old school home computer and 25 pre-installed titles.

What’s on the Inside

Lee, Berzerk, Millipede, Miner 2049er, M.U.L.E, and Star Raiders II are just some of the titles included in the pre-loaded selection. The rest of the bundle comes courtesy of a wider lineage. The return of 8-bt home computing can emulate all Atari 8-bit systems, from the 400 through to the 800XL, including the Atari 5200 Home Console. While the new old offering from Atari looks back for it’s design choices and software selection, the gaming is supported by something a bit more modern. An AllWinner H3 processor sits at its core, with 256MB; FLASH: 128MB. There’s support for multi region 720 HD output via HDMI, with PAL (50Hz) and NTSC (60Hz) compatibility. Play in original 4:3 or pixel perfect aspect ratios, with or without CRT filters. Owners can also side load games via USB and rewind the action by up to 40 seconds.

Much like the recent slew of other retro experiences and small scale recreations, the THE400 Mini looks like half size modern Atari 400, but it’s nearer to a Super Pocket than a decades old home console. What you will get, however, is a cool looking shell and the nostalgia of pressing actual buttons instead of clicking play on Steam. If you’re looking to reminisce then check out THE400 Mini at major stores online or find out more on the official website. US consumers can check out the Atari website for this small scale option.
