There’s Going To Be A Super Mario Movie 2

Mario Day heralds Super Mario Movie 2 and we’re not sure why.

Mario day landed over the weekend, taking over March 10 with a mix of news, offers, a and a little ‘Yahoo’ from Nintendo fans everywhere. For those of you unaware of what went on yesterday, then it might be worth just skipping most of the news and heading over to try out Princess Peach: Showtime! For free. In among details of Nintendo eShop discounts and reasons to go back and play some old school Mario Bros, we also got ample time to prepare ourselves for another Super Mario Movie.

Trailed in an announcement by Miyamoto and Chris Meledandri of Illumination Studios, the news of an additional Super Mario Movie didn’t come with a great deal of detail. We know that the original did some ridiculous numbers at the box office, with more than $1 billon at the box office, worldwide. Despite this it saw some significant critical pushback, although not nearly as much fan criticism. It’s been labelled as, ‘a colorful — albeit thinly plotted — animated adventure’ and scored 59% on Rotten Tomatoes. Overall fan submitted scores are somewhat higher, but maybe I’m just the outlier here.

Despite the lack of detail, we know that we’re getting another. While Miyamoto did not confirm a date or any casting, it’s expected we will see Chris Pratt, Blackjack, and co return. Like Miyamoto, we will tell you when we know more. For some of the more immediate Mario Day treats, head over to the Nintendo website for some fun updates.
