Ultra Sun & Moon the Final Pokemon RPGs for 3DS

According to IGN, Ultra Sun & Moon will be the final Pokemon RPGs made for 3DS. Game Freak Director Shigeru Ohmori confirmed this in an interview where he said that they have reached the full extent of what can be achieved on 3DS.

Ultra Sun & Moon taken to its full extent on 3DS

“With Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon,” explains Ohmori, “we’ve tried to eke that out more and really, really push the system to its absolute limits, and we’re now feeling that perhaps this is the maximum of what we can get out. So we’re really treating Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon as the culmination of our work with the 3DS system.”

All is not lost, however, as a “core Pokemon RPG” is already in development for the Switch. While we don’t know for certain if it’s a Sun & Moon game, we do know a couple things:

  • the team is about 80 developers
  • half are working on Ultra
  • the other half is working on something else
  • it is a “young team”

Other than that, the team is focused on providing better visuals, multiplayer and extras for the series. A Netflix anime is also in the works.
