January Prime Gaming update adds Control, Young Souls, LEGO Fortnite, and more for free.
January Prime Gaming is here, and this time the retailer’s online game streaming platform is the star of the show. Amazon Prime subscribers will get the usual mix of free games, loot drops, and gaming perks they’d normally expect, but this month they can stream some impressive games for no extra cost. Similar to the defunct Google Stadia or GeForce Now, Amazon’s Luna service allows players to pick up a compatible device and play a range of big and small adventures across the internet. This month, Amazon has added Control Ultimate Edition, Kitaria Fables, Wonderboy: The Dragon Trap and Young Souls. Players will also have full access to Fortnite, LEGO Fortnite, Rocket Racing, Fortnite Festival and Trackmania.
Free to play Luna additions are refreshed most months, meaning you’ll have a month to step into the old House and take on paranormal threats in Control. If you’re looking for something a bit more laid back then Kirita Fabels provides an escape to the country, with a mix of farming, village life, and an expansive RPG. Think, Story of Seasons or Hello Kitty Island Adventure.
Wonderboy: The Dragon’s Trap is a modern day indie remake of the 1989 game Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap. This 2D action platformer channels retro nostalgia without feeling old and is a great pick up and play experience.
Most intriguing, for me, is the utterly gorgeous Young Souls. Players leaping into this action brawler RPG will find themselves in the shoes of orphans Jenn and Tristan. After their foster scientist goes missing under mysterious circumstances, they set ut to find him, battling hordes of monsters along the way. With a wonderful art style, tons of weapons, and flashy side scrolling action this is going to be my first Luna play.
Thankfully, you can play all these titles for free right away. The Luna library rotates at the start of each month. There are some limitations. You will nee to be in the US, UK, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, or Spain to get the games and have a spare mobile or desktop internet connection that can support game streaming.
Free Games
For those that aren’t able to try out Luna, then January Prime Gaming still includes even more. The free games list for the start of 2024 is topped by Endling – Extinction is Forever. Available now, this indie tale visits a world ravaged by mankind, where nature is on its last legs. As the mother to a litter of fox cubs, you must survive and protect your brood long enough to make sure that the species doesn’t disappear forever. It’s a seemingly simple but moving story that might only clock in at four hours, but it’s absolutely worth keeping forever.
The remaining free games unlock throughout January and include:
• January 11 Apico [Amazon Games App] – Set in a series of lush environments, players can breed, collect and conserve bees in this laid-back beekeeping sim game.
• January 18 Atari Mania [Epic Games Store] – Journey through this minigame collection wrapped in a humorous retro-driven narrative of exploration and surprise.
• January 25 Yars: Recharged [Epic Games Store] – Destroy enemy homeworld defenses in this bullet-dodging, boss-rush revival of the classic 1982 Atari title.
Loot
Of course, there’s tons of free loot too. Anybody with a prime subscription can log into the Prime Gaming portal and grab in game drop, skins, and a pocket full of currency. Right now, that means Aion players can a 7-Day Prestige Pass and Grade A Rank 4 Minion Contract Selection Box. League of Legend experts can unlock a Prime Gaming Capsule, Diablo IV gets a spooky new mount, and World of Warcraft heroes can lock in the Swift Windsteed Mount. That’s not all. Destiny 2, Valorant, Runescape, Fallout 76 and more all feature today. I’d expect more coming so best to head over and lock in the loot.
If you manage to play through that list before the end of January, then there’s plenty of other free games out thee to keep you entertained. You an check out what’s new today on Epic and check out the latest tranche of free Netflix titles too. Amazon Prime subscribers can find out more about what’s on offer over on the Prime Gaming blog now.
