PlayStation 5 cloud gaming just kicked off a beta and introduced 4K game streaming for a select bunch of titles.

Reports across the verge and internet gaming forums seem to suggest that gamers are receiving invites to a PS5 Public Beta and PS5 Cloud Streaming program. Seemingly coming to PlayStation 5 owners and Ps Plus Premium, the final form of this testing phase is supposedly going to give us 4K cloud gaming via Sony’s platforms.

The news of this early access regime comes from a few different places. Twitter seems to verify that invites are going out, while The Verge has sourced in platform screenshots from Resetera’s boards. While this doesn’t constitute a direct confirmation from Sony, it’s enough to assume it’s happening.

What it Means

The move to 4K gaming means player in this program can play games like God of War: Ragnarok, Horizon Forbidden West, Fortnite, Fall Guys, Destiny 2, Returnal, Demon’s Souls, Death Stranding, Sackboy A Big Adventure, Destruction All Stars, Fall Guys, and maybe more, without downloading a game. This means, as far as we can tell, players will still likely need a PlayStation 5 in front of them and a Premium PS Plus account. It’s expected we will see the tech expand, but this is largely just an expectation based on Sony’s previous statements.

The 4K add on for PS5 game streams is an interesting development. Other online services such as GeForce Now require additional payment for higher tier streaming, with services like Shadow PC offering their resolution on 1080p at the base subscription. Whether Sony chooses to shake up the market, and what sort of connection you’ll need to play reasonably, is all yet to be seen.
