Tencent Holdings has secured the rights to build and publish Blue Protocol Mobile

The much-hyped anime MMORPG Blue Protocol isn’t even out on PC or Console yet, but that hasn’t stopped Tencent getting in on the action. The Chinese gaming giant has just secured the right to make and release a mobile spin off of this title. Breaking overnight, the news doesn’t mean that a handheld view of Regnas is imminent. News of what Tencent plans to do with the option isn’t exactly clear yet, but it’s unlikely to sit on its hands for this one.

For the uninitiated, Blue Protocol is an anime inspired MMORPG that takes place in a world ravaged by technology and disasters. While the world saving scenario is pretty common for video games, the aesthetic and action combat draw on a formula that’s been hugely successful in Japan already. The original release of the big screen PC version of Blue Protocol drew something around 600,000 players right away, with numbers fluctuating since the June 2023 launch. The title’s global launch, under the Amazon Games brand, has been hugely anticipated. Now, a mobile entry could fit perfectly into Tencent’s already huge catalogue of free to play adventures.

For Tencent, this is a huge win. The success of Hoyoverse in establishing a market for anime inspired online games has likely led to this move. The likes of Genshin Impact and Hokkai Star Rail continue to dominate the gaming market. For Amazon, this might be a complicated outcome. While Amazon are busy hyping up the launch of Blue Protocol in Western markets, and the game is undoubtedly great fun, I’m not sure that this will end up doing anything more than splintering the layer base if a mobile game makes it out west. We will just have to see how this unfolds. To check out our impressions of Blue Protocol well ahead of any Blue Protocol Mobile release, head over to our Gamescom 2023 hands on preview.

For those of you who I’ve not met yet, my name is Ed. After an early indoctrination into PC gaming, years adrift on the unwashed internet, running a successful guild, and testing video games, I turned my hand to writing about them. Now, you will find me squawking across a multitude of sites and even getting to play games now and then
