Twitch are set to end support for its Nintendo Switch ap next year
It looks like Nintendo Switch owners are going to have to find a bigger screen if they want to watch Twitch. Since 2021, players and Switch owners have been able to kick back on the go or at home and watch a range of hugely popular Twitch streamers thanks to the native app. However, Twitch will no longer support this, starting 31 January 2024.
The software hasn’t had the best reviews, with a number of UI and general usability complaints. The hopes that twitch would fix this were dashed, and team purple confirmed the move was permanent in a statement to The Verge.
“We recently made the difficult decision to remove the Twitch app from the Nintendo Switch,” Twitch’s Gabriella Raila said in a statement to The Verge. “Nintendo remains a valued partner and we appreciate all of the support the Switch community has provided to Twitch and our streamers.”
Realistically, this isn’t a major inconvenience for any who might use a mobile phone while on the move to watch, while the native Nintendo Switch app never did seemingly allow you to stream. External video capture hardware like the Genki: Shadowcast has always been the best option for streaming onto the purple page. It’s still disappointing to see Twitch be quite so nonchalant about supporting a major gaming system, and players who want to continue using the app even without support will have to download it as soon as possible. Twitch will remove the app from the eShop on 6 November and access will vanish for all of us on 31 January 2024.
