Strategy-Inspired Battles in Ni No Kuni 2

Bandai Namco is really ramping up the hype for Ni No Kuni 2 with the release of a second game play video. This one is hosted by Brand Manager Stephen Akana and features almost a half-hour of game play action.

The fight is in the strategy-inspired “skirmish mode” where “chibi versions of the game’s main characters” fight on large open battlefields against literal armies.

Players will be able to command a variety of units, each with its own strengths and weaknesses in attack. Red Sword Wielders, Blue Spear Users and Green Hammer Swingers. Each unit is strong against at least one other. For example, green is strong against blue, blue is strong against red and red is strong against gree. It’s a basic “rock, paper, scissors” type scenario. Commanders hide away in fortresses that can be destroyed.

The “normal” game is typical of the JRPG genre with players taking quests and proceeding through towns and dungeons to collect items and explore the game worlds. Running into monsters initiates battle that is contained on a small map.

Ni No Kuni 2 will be launching for PC via Steam and PlayStation 4 on March 23rd.
