Not only is the PS5 Pro real but recent leaks have revealed an upcoming console with a huge leap in GPU performance on the current PlayStation console.
Based on reporting by The Verge, it seems that Sony’s latest console, codenamed ‘Trinity’, is a new PS5 Pro version that is coming very soon. More significantly, the news outfit published a reported rundown of the new console’s capabilities that are significant enough that we expect them to have a copy of developer documents used to prep for the upcoming console.
While it’s no surprised that a PS5 Pro would be faster than the base model, the new version will reportedly include a ‘Trinity Mode’ which will target 3.85GHz CPU frequency. That is just under a 10% bump from the CPU speed of the original model. Based on the detail, this seems to mean that developers will be able to switch between two different base and ‘Trinity’ mode frequencies, specification a performance during games. While the details aren’t complete about this mode, it doesn’t look like it is a simple overclock or boost mode. We don’t know if this selection is entirely transient or impact an entire gaming session. We do, however, know that when the CPU cycles up, the PS5 isn’t going to draw any more power, so there are trade-offs with the significantly beefier GPU taking a minor hit.
The biggest improvements seem to be in the graphics unit. The PS5 GGPU speed will allow it to come in at around 45 % faster than the original when rendering. This is supported by and additional 1.2GB of system memory for games, with higher bandwidth. The result is more memory support that bumps up speed by 28 percent, running at 576GB/s.
The new model is likely to include enhanced support for Sony’s new ray tracing architecture, higher frame rates, PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) support, and 8K enhancements. While we don’t have a tear down or a list of the internals, the details released via social media and fellow news sites seem to suggest that the PS5 isn’t dead, but Sony is certainly looking to improve upon it. It will be interesting to see if Microsoft and it’s Xbox brand follow suit or if the continued lean into cloud everywhere means that we will see a long-term differentiation between team blue and green hardware.
